Janet Lynn (Burnhauser) Mertz was born on October 17, 1938 in Jim Thorpe, Carbon County, Pennsylvania United States. She was married to Allen Thomas Mertz in 1958 in Jim Thorpe, Carbon County, and they were together until Allen's death on March 15, 2019 at Lehigh Valley Hospice-Lehigh Street 2024 Lehigh Street, in Allentown, Lehigh County. She had children Lana Jane Mertz, Thomas Allen Mertz, and Lisa Jennifer Bleskachek. Janet Mertz died at age 84 years old on January 12, 2023 in Walnutport, Northampton County, and was buried on January 17, 2023 at Packerton Cemetery in Lehighton, Carbon County.

In 1938, in the year that Janet Lynn Mertz was born, on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."

With the support of Canada and the United Kingdom, the Project came to employ more than 130,000 people and cost nearly $2 billion. Julius Robert Oppenheimer, a nuclear physicist born in New York, led the Los Alamos Laboratory that developed the actual bomb. The first artificial nuclear explosion took place near Alamogordo New Mexico on July 16, 1945.
