Janet Thompson (Cairns) Cleave was born in 1885 to David Cairns Jnr and Hannah Elizabeth Russell. She married Albert Bertram Cleave, and had children Vera Cleave and Joan Cleave. Janet Cleave died at age 95 years old on March 11, 1981, and was buried at Flinders Cemetery in Flinders, Mornington Peninsula Shire County, VIC Australia.

In 1885, in the year that Janet Thompson (Cairns) Cleave was born, on February 16th, the first Dow Jones Industrial Average was published by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. The index was 62.76. It represented 12 stocks - American Cotton Oil, American Sugar, American Tobacco, Chicago Gas, Distilling & Cattle Feeding, General Electric, Laclede Gas, National Lead, North American, Tennessee Coal and Iron, U.S. Leather pfd. and U.S. Rubber.

In 1942, when she was 57 years old, on February 19th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. This authorized the Secretary of War to "prescribe certain areas as military zones." On March 21st, he signed Public Law 503 which was approved after an hour discussion in the Senate and 30 minutes in the House. The Law provided for enforcement of his Executive Order. This cleared the way for approximately 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry to be evicted from the West Coast and to be held in concentration camps and other confinement sites across the country. In Hawaii, a few thousand were detained. German and Italian Americans in the U.S. were also confined.
