  • Introduction

Jasper Leroy Virden was my father. He was very strict with my sister and I. But he was fair. During his early years in the Army Air Corps he enjoyed playing cards and going out with members of his squadron. He was stationed in Japan in 1946. I don't know what his job was, but he was an aircraft mechanic. After Japan he was part of the Geodesic Survey squadron. After that he was a crew chief for SAC. Then he was transfered to the Tactical Air Command maintaining T33 and P80 jets that were being used to train foreign pilots. He had his pilot's license. But, to my knowledge, didn't use it much until he was stationed at Wheelus Air Force Base, North Africa. While there he was assigned as base aero club manager. He and mom would take the club Piper Commanche 250 and fly to Tunis, West of Tripoli. His last job for the Air Force was NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer-in-charge) of the maintaince crews for 12 B-52s.After retiring from the Air Force he worked for an ammunition maker as their humidity and environmental control technician. When he finally retired his health was failing. He had COPD, liver sclerosis, among others. He fought hard to defeat his illnesses but failed on March 27, 1988 passing in his sleep.
