Jean-Jacob Heppell 1753 - 1833

Jean-Jacob Heppell was born in 1753 in Salem, New York United States to Nicolas Heppell and Mary Reis. He married Agnes Lavioe on January 19, 1790, and they were married until Agnes' death. They had a child Therese (Heppell). He would also marry Victoire Bouillon on April 24, 1798 at St-Germain Rimouski in Rimouski, Bas-Saint-Laurent County, Québec Canada. They had children Joseph Heppell, Jean Heppell, Basile Heppell, and Marie (Heppell). Jean-Jacob Heppell died at age 79 years old on April 14, 1833.

    Jean-Jacob Heppell was born in New York to Nicolas Heppell. His father was a surgeon and major in Lafayette's army who fought with the Americans for Independence. Jean-Jacob was born in 1753, the year after his parents married. According to the website heppell.ca, Jean-Jacob was taken prisoner by Native Americans making his way from New York to Canada through the woods and lost his first wife and 12 year old son. Together with 2 cousins, he eventually made his way to Rimouski, Québec in the late 1780's. In Canada, Jean-Jacob registered as a laborer (french "laboureur"). He had 3 children with his (second) wife, Agnes, whom he married in/about 1790. Jean-Jacob had 7 or 8 children with his third wife Victorie.
