  • Ethnicity & Family History

Jean (also Jehan) was born in France. He migrated with his family (parents, brother and uncle) to Quebec when he was about 14 years old. He married in 1649 in Canada. His oldest son Noel was born 2 years later in Quebec, as were all 5+ of their children. According to old records his wife Anne Langlois was born in in 1637, making her only 12 years old and Jean 22 at the time of their marriage. As this age seems shockingly young for a bride and no children were born to the couple until 2 years after their marriage, one wonders (hopes) the age was mistaken. However, all 3 of Anne's younger sisters including Marguerite and Marie were also married off at very young ages.
  • Professional Career

Old records indicate that in 1646, Jean was "given to the Jesuits" or "gave himself to the Jesuits". This apparently didn't last more than a few years. He later was described as a sawyer (logger), carpenter and "charbonnier et défricheur" literally "charcoal burner". It seems he followed in his father's profession at least in part as a charcoal merchant, but there was also likely a great demand for loggers in the 1600's in "Nouvelle France" / Quebec to clear land.
