Jerome Alphonse Sand was born on September 26, 1934 to Catharina Sand and Leo Michael Sand, and had siblings Pauline Mary Kruschek, Joan Christine Otto, Edmund Clarence Sand, Lucille R Sand, Ervin Herman Sand, Werner Peter Sand, Rembert Alois Sand, and Marlene Margaret Benkowski. Jerome Sand died at age 79 years old on September 25, 2014.

In 1934, in the year that Jerome Alphonse Sand was born, on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.

In 1943, by the time he was merely 9 years old, on June 20th through June 22nd, the Detroit Race Riot erupted at Belle Isle Park. The rioting spread throughout the city (made worse by false rumors of attacks on blacks and whites) and resulted in the deployment of 6,000 Federal troops. 34 people were killed, (25 of them black) - mostly by white police or National Guardsmen, 433 were wounded (75 percent of them black) and an estimated $2 million of property was destroyed. The same summer, there were riots in Beaumont, Texas and Harlem, New York.
