Jimmy Robert Mecaskey (1938 - 2011) Jimmy Robert Mecaskey, 73, passed away Friday, June 17, 2011, at a Fort Worth care facility with family by his side. Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Decatur. Participants in the graveside service are asked to dress for the weather; no formal attire required. Immediately following the service, a celebration of Jim's life will be held at Remarkable Healthcare, 6649 N. Riverside Drive. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to Remarkable Healthcare. Jimmy R. Mecaskey was born Feb. 24, 1938, in Decatur, the son of Finis C. and Ina Mae Mecaskey. He grew up on a dairy farm in Decatur before moving to Fort Worth and graduating from Polytechnic High School in 1956. Jim attended UTA after high school, then served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. He married Lavonda Poole in 1958, and they were married 33 years until her death in 1991. After the Coast Guard, Jim started work with the Santa Fe Railroad and remained there for over 30 years until retiring in 1995 as the air brake systems supervisor. With Santa Fe, Jim also moved from Texas to Topeka, Kan., in 1975 and lived in Topeka for 20 years. For many years he was a locomotive engineer, creating a trove of stories of riding the rails. Jim was also a 32nd-degree Master Mason and took great pride in his membership in the fraternity. In 1993, Jim married Nancy Kinser, who survives him. Together, they retired, enjoying travel, pursuit of their hobbies, embracing their grandkids, holding hands, and several moves, first to Bella Vista, Ark., then to Granbury. Jim was an avid golfer and loved to read. His creative streak found release in his photography, his photos most often of the people he loved. He also made the best biscuits-and-gravy in the world. Jim's was a quiet, content spirit, to match his soft-spoken voice; yet he loved and was loved deeply. Survivors: His beloved wife of 17 years, Nancy; son, Scott Mecaskey of Topeka, Kan.; brothers, Charles Mecaskey of Bedford and Jerry Mecaskey of Whitewright; stepchildren and their spouses, Annette and Joe Tate and Paul and LouAnn Stumbo, all of Fort Worth, and Laurie Beth and Jon McPike of Southlake; and 15 grandchildren, who all adored "Grampa."
