Joanne (Gordon) Graves was born in Louisiana to Abraham and Mildred M. Gordon and grew up with her siblings Garlon, Roland, Helen, and Mary Ann in St Landry Louisiana. Joanne Gordon married Curtis Graves, a civil rights activist, former politician, and photographer from Texas. Curtis was a major force in the Civil Rights Movement, working alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1967 to 1973. Together, Joanne and Curtis had a daughter named Gizelle Annette Bryant Graves, born in September 1970 in Harris County, Texas. Gizelle went on to become an American model, author, and television personality, known for her appearance on the reality TV series The Real Housewives of Potomac since 2016. She was also the First Lady of Empowerment Temple AME and launched her beauty brand, EveryHue Beauty, in 2017. In addition, Gizelle co-hosted Bravo's Chat Room in 2020 and teamed up with Robyn Dixon for the Reasonably Shady podcast in 2021, which was nominated for Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Podcast at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards in 2022. Joanne has lived in Louisiana, Washington D.C., and Texas. Currently Curtis currently works as an artistic photographer, having previously worked for NASA and as Director for Civil Affairs.
