Johann Bast was born to Hans Bast (1909 - 1971) and Wilhelmine Kappelmann (born 1910). His father was born in Germany, as was his mother. Johann had one brother, Henry Bast (born 1930) and one sister, Helene Bast. Johann married Sylvia Ann Hunt (1938 - 2017) on May 12, 1957. They had children Johann Bast and Eric Bast.

Johann was Caucasian of German heritage on both his paternal and maternal lines. Both of his parents were born in Germany.

A native of New York, Johann was raised in New York and moved to Alexandria, Ohio at the end of his life. He died in Alexandria after residing there for a little over a decade. He died there at the age of 74.

Johann's funeral service was at Pilgrim Lutheran Church. He was a member of the church.

Johann served 26 years with the United States Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant with the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing in Ramstein, Germany. He served in Korea and Guam.

Johann was on the Building Committee at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, a member of the Fellowship No. 265 D&AM, OES Reber Chapter No. 161, and Scottish Rite. He enjoyed tole painting, wood carving, and building. Johann married Sylvia Ann Hunt on May 12, 1957. They had children Johann Bast and Eric Bast. He was survived by two grandchildren and brother Henry.
