John A. Shiffer Jr Obituary
John A. Shiffer Jr., 71, Elliottsburg RD1, died Sunday January 28, 1990 in Carlisle Hospital. Born in Millerstown, Perry County, Jan 27, 1919, he was a son of the late John A. Sr and Ina H (Gould) Shiffer.
He was retired from the Department of Defense, Mechanicsburg, and was a former Saville Township supervisor. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the Third Cavalry, 777th Tank Battalion. He was a former member of Old Guard, Arlington, Va., and U.S. Horse Cavalry Association. He was a member of VFW Post 7463, New Bloom-field; VFW Post 5049, Millerstown; American Legion Post 364, Liverpool; DAV. No. 49, Newport; Messiah Lutheran Church; Moose Lodge 925, Millerstown; Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Assn.; and Shermans Valley Heritage Days.
Mr. Shiffer is survived by his wife, Gloria L. Shiffer; four daughters, Dorothy E. Wesner of Selinsgrove, Joyce I. Stultz of East Berlin, G. Amy Fry of Dover and Marjorie J. Dowdrick of Elliottsburg RD1; two sons, John A. III of Newport RD4 and Ricky W. Sr. of Ickesburg; four brothers, D. Lindley and Willard. both of Millerstown RD2, Clair of Millerstown and Glenn of Sterling, Conn.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Messiah Lutheran Church. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Visitors may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, and after 10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, Elliottsburg.
