Jack was the second son of William Hay Ferguson and wife Katherine Ayres, both of Koronavia (Ranga), Flinders Island, Tasmania. His elder full sibling was William, then Dorothy (Doffy) was born to Katherine's sister Isabella (Belle) Ayres one month later. Other full siblings were Keith, Jean, Mary and Kenneth. His birth location, whether on Flinders Island or perhaps Launceston Tasmania is presently uncertain. He inherited 333 acres of the easternmost part of William's property "Koronavia" which lay on the upstream reach of Ferguson's Creek and came to be named "Koringa". He married Dora May Hammond from the Lady Barron area of Flinders Island. They built a fibro house and shearing shed and mainly raised sheep. Their children were Doreen Mabel Ferguson who married John Albert Coyle and lived in Moe & Newborough, Latrobe Valley, Victoria; Jeannine who married Peter Giles and lived at "Thalloo", Tanjil South, Victoria; John Hay Ferguson who married Pearl Robinson of Flinders Island and lived in Bairnsdale, Victoria; and Katherine Vida Ferguson, who married Robert Ryland and lived in Hobart, Tasmania. Circa 1968, Jack & Dora sold Koringa to Kenneth & Lana (Broad) Ferguson and moved to a 68 acre property on the Princes Highway, near Lucknow, east of Bairnsdale, Victoria. They farmed sheep and agisted some cattle there until they sold the property to the Overends who owned a transport business; and built a home on a block of an acre or so in Lucknow itself (both Lucknow properties called "Blair Atholl" after the yellow sandstone residence of his grandfather William Ferguson Sr. in Sandy Bay, Hobart, Tasmania - now known as "Manresa" and classified by the National Trust), where they lived for many more years until Jack became terminally ill and went into Latrobe Valley Hospital. At that time, Jeannine and Peter Giles built a granny flat at Thalloo, to which Dora relocated. During this short period, Dora suffered a fatal stroke. Two or three days later, Jack passed away after learning of her death. They were buried together at Moe Cemetery. Jack and Dora were a wonderful loving couple. They were the glue that held the extended family together, such that every year, there was the big family get-together for Christmas Dinner with all the aunts, uncles, cousins, grandchildren and so on at Lucknow, plus all the other regular visits. While still on Koringa, they played a large part in raising me, their eldest grandson Kerry John Coyle, who spent a large proportion of time with them there from about the age of three. Although the life was hard enough for Jack with his permanently straight leg and for Dora too, it was a memorable life in paradise to that youngster.
  • Religious Beliefs

Jack was nominally of the Scottish Presbyterian Church, though not a particularly religious or actively practising Christian. Dora was of the Roman Catholic faith and the marriage resulted in their progeny being raised as Roman Catholics.
  • Military Service

Jack's permanent leg injury precluded active military service. At some point, he was a reservist, but not a veteran.
  • Professional Career

Sheep farmer at Koringa and Blair Atholl #1, Jack also did livestock marshalling on horseback at the Bairnsdale livestock saleyards and became renowned in that area as a first class fence builder.
