John Allan Keith Brownfield was born in 1901 to Thomas Brownfield and Ruth (Kingston) Brownfield, and had siblings Irene Margaret (Brownfield) McPhate, Thomas Clyde Brownfield, Eliza Ann Brownfield, and Ruby Myrtle Brownfield. John Brownfield died at age 2 years old in 1903.

He has been referred to as America's greatest banker. U.S. Steel was the first billion dollar company in the world, worth $1.4 billion in 1901.
