John Anthony Greulich Jr. was born on March 2, 1910 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey United States. He married Stella Anne Greulich in 1931 in Nutley, Essex County and they later divorced in 1971 in Nutley. They had children Alan John Greulich, Beverly Jean Mancinelli, and John Anthony Greulich III. He also married Helen Anna Greulich in 1979 in Bloomfield, Essex County, and they were married until John's death on December 22, 1991 in West Orange.

An unknown Boy Scout helped him find his way out, declining a tip (he said that he was a Boy Scout and was doing his good deed for the day). Boyce was so impressed that he incorporated the Boy Scouts of America when he returned home. Its purpose was "to teach boys patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values."
