  • Introduction

    John A. "Jack" Callan, loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 15th, 2023, at age 80. He was born on June 19, 1942 in Springfield, MA to Philip and Dorothea (Foye) Callan. After leaving Springfield, he lived in Newton, MA, Enfield, CT and Ellington, CT. John graduated from Newton High School in MA in 1960. He matriculated to Boston University and earned a B.A. in 1964. After he retired from a career in medical sales, he was employed by Smyth Bus Co. in East Windsor, CT. John spent his youth playing football and baseball and shared fond memories of his childhood friends. He loved spending time with his family and many cousins at the ocean in Maine. He was always proud of having received Springfield's "Alert Youth Award" for saving two young boys from drowning in Springfield in 1953. Later, he became a tennis player and won many local tournaments. He coached Girls' Tennis at Enfield High School. He was a voracious reader and wordsmith. He enjoyed all sports and was a fan of the Patriots and Red Sox. He enjoyed music, talking politics, reading the newspaper and watching Jeopardy. With a sharp sense of humor and a quick and witty remark, he always brought joy to his friends and family. His greatest happiness was being with his kids, being Pampie to his grandkids and being married to the love of his life, Sonja. He loved telling stories from his life and always had a twinkle in his blue Irish eyes. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Sonja (Burneko), his adoring children David Callan, Scott Callan, Tracy and (Jeff) Robillard, and Beth Callan; five grandchildren Katie, Emily, and Julie Robillard and Henry and Jillian Callan; his brother and best friend, Philip J. Callan, Jr., a sister, Maureen Callan, a niece and two nephews and many cousins. He was predeceased by his infant son John Todd. Visitation Hours will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at Leete-Stevens. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund,10 Brookline Pl, Brookline, MA 02445, and to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
