John Barnaby Lancaster 1884 - 1947

John Barnaby Lancaster of Vaug Australia was born in 1884 in Vaughan, Mount Alexander Shire County, VIC to William Lancaster and Ellen Larkin Lancaster. He had siblings Thomas Lancaster, William Lancaster, Peter Lancaster, David Lancaster, Andrew Lancaster, and James Lancaster. He married Gerte Elizabeth (Willoughby) Lancaster, and had children Bessie Edith Lancaster, Andrew Arthur Lancaster, and Lorna May Lancaster. John Lancaster died at age 62 years old on November 4, 1947 in Irymple, Mildura Rural City County, and was buried in Nichols Point.

In 1913, he married Gertrude Elizabeth Willoughby (1886-1978) in Victoria, Australia. They had children Lorna May (1913-2006), Bessie Edith (1914-1999), Andrew Arthur (1916-1997), and Bernard Thomas Lancaster (1929-1982). The family lived in Newstead, Grampians, Victoria, Australia and Mildura, Wimmera, Victoria, Australia.

In 1884, in the year that John Barnaby Lancaster was born, on May 1st, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions - a US association - first resolved that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labour from and after May 1, 1886, and that we recommend to labour organisations throughout this jurisdiction that they so direct their laws as to conform to this resolution by the time named." Previously, workdays would consist of 10 to 16 hours a day - 6 days a week. It would take years before the 8 hour workday became common practice - and longer before it became a law.
