John Beveridge Farrell's History: 1926 - 2009

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

John was my mother's first cousin-their mothers were sisters. His father was John Farrell, born in Ireland but I do not have birth or death dates. He suffered a severe stroke that I think was sometime in the early 1950's and I can only remember him always being in a wheel chair and never could understand anything he said-he seemed to be totally disabled. His mother was Elizabeth T. Beveridge, born in 1890 in Salt Lake City and died in 1976 in Long Beach, Ca.. She was very proud of John and always called him JB. John was an Annapolis graduate and became a pilot in the US Navy, attaining the rank of LtCdr.. During the 1960's he was on the Advisory Committee for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He served in Vietnam, and from what I was told, one of his shoulders was badly injured from a jeep accident the day he was scheduled to come home to the States. This prevented him from flying for the Navy any more and he was assigned to office work at Pearl Harbor until he retired.

In 1926, in the year that John Beveridge Farrell was born, on October 31st, Harry Houdini died in Michigan. Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
