He had sisters Martha Ruth (1924-1997), Evelyn (1927-2010), and Angelina Rebecca Pinkman (1927-2002). They grew up in Newark, Essex, New Jersey, USA. At the age of 18, he registered for the draft on March 19, 1943, in Orange, Essex, New Jersey, USA, where he was residing. A few months later on July 2, 1943, Pinkman enlisted in the United States Army in Newark, New Jersey. He held the rank of Private and entered the service as part of the "Selectees (Enlisted Men)" component. John served in the U.S. Army as a Private in the 308th Port Company, 509th Port Battalion from July 23, 1943, to March 15, 1946, receiving an honorable discharge.
