John Body was born in February 1848 in Crediton, Devon County, England United Kingdom to Josiah Body MD and Mary Snell, and had siblings Henry Marten Body Md and George Body. He married Sarah Elizabeth Reagn on June 10, 1872 in Iola, Allen County, Kansas United States, and they were married until John's death on December 2, 1923. John Body had children Ellen Snell Body and Herbert Trenavin Body.

In 1872, John was 24 years old when on December 4th, the empty American ship Mary Celeste was found in the Atlantic Ocean. Still seaworthy, under partial sail, and with one lifeboat missing, what happened on her is still a mystery. Her cargo and provisions were intact and she was used as a cargo vessel for another 12 years but the people onboard were never seen again
