John Bretton 1905 - 1969

John Rockwell Bretton of Logan, Phillips County, Kansas was born on July 29, 1905 to John Washington Bretton and Edith Harriet Preston. He had siblings Mavor Bretton, Charles Edward Bretton, Clara Marvel Bretton, Henry Lyman Bretton, Gerald Clarence Bretton, Mavor Orlin Bretton, Avery Preston Bretton, Winifred Arlene Bretton, Agnes Luella Bretton, William Henry Bretton, Janie Bretton, Walter Roy Bretton, Kathryn Sophia Bretton, and Oscar Bretton. He married Annabelle Watkins, and died at age 64 years old in July 1969. John Bretton was buried at Bretton Cemetery in Speed.

In 1905, in the year that John Bretton was born, the Niagara Falls conference was held in Fort Erie, Ontario. Led by W.E.B. Du Bois and William Monroe Trotter, a group of African-American men met in opposition to racial segregation and disenfranchisement. Booker T. Washington had been calling for policies of accommodation and conciliation and these two men, along with the others who attended the conference, felt that this was accomplishing nothing. The group was the precursor to the NAACP.

In 1924, by the time he was 19 years old, on January 21st, Vladimir Lenin, a leader of the Russian Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union died. He had survived two assassination attempts but had subsequent physical problems, suffering 3 strokes. He was in such great pain, it is said that he asked Stalin to poison him. The circumstances of his death are still disputed. He did oppose Stalin as the next leader - nonetheless, Stalin won a power struggle and ruled as a Soviet dictator until his death in 1953.
