  • Introduction

John Atkinson was my Father. He was born and raised in New Orleans, La. He served in the Merchant Marines during world war 2 as a medic (pharmacists mate). After the war, John married his life-long love, Anna Edith Sievers, also from New Orleans and he ended up working for the United Fruit company as a finance clerk in Bananera, Guatemala for several years. On Christmas day, 1946 their first child, Marjorie Jean ('Mitzie') was born. All 3 of their children were born in New Orleans due to the lack of high quality hospitals in Guatemala. Mickey would take a banana ship to New Orleans to birth the babies, then sail back on another when the infant was old enough to travel. New Orleans was a major port of entry for the banana trade out of Central America. In 1949, John Jr. was born and in 1950 Thomas Robert was born.
