In 1824, in the year that John Calvanese was born, on December 3rd, the U.S. presidential election of 1824 was finally decided. None of the four candidates for U.S. President gained a majority of the electoral votes so for the first - and last - time the election was thrown into the U.S. House of Representatives for a decision, called a contingent election. John Quincy Adams won on the first vote. Another candidate, Andrew Jackson, never accepted the results and accused Adams and Henry Clay - the Speaker of the House - of striking a "corrupt bargain".
Did you know?
In 1839, he was merely 15 years old when on January 2nd, the first photo of the Moon was taken by Louis Daguerre, known as the "father of photography". The following June, he applied for and got a patent for his camera - to which France acquired the rights in exchange for a lifetime pension for Louis and his co-inventor's nephew. The camera was available to the public by September. It cost 400 francs (about $50 US then, almost $1270 today) and weighed 120 pounds.
