He had siblings Bridget Margaret (Byrne) Donnellon, David Cahill Byrne, James Byrne, Richard Thomas Byrne, and Daniel Corkery Alexander Byrne. He married Annie Elizabeth (Dillon) Byrne in 1904, and had children John Byrne, Margaret Byrne, Roger Byrne, Theresa Catherine Byrne, William Byrne, Agnes Byrne, and Edmund Charles Byrne. John Byrne died at age 72 years old in July 1950 in Dandenong, City of Greater Dandenong County, VIC.

In 1892, when he was just 15 years old, on October 5th, the Dalton Gang was shot. The Gang was attempting to rob two banks - simultaneously - in Coffeyville Kansas but word spread of the robberies and townspeople with guns greeted them when they left the banks. Four members of the gang were killed - only Emmett Dalton survived his wounds and spent 14 years in prison.
