Introduction

John Charles Hikins, Sr. was my father. He was born in 1900 and died in 1975. He went to sea during WW I as a merchant mariner at age 16, serving as a deck hand on oil tankers constructed largely of wood. By the time WW II ended, he had risen to the rank of commander in the US Merchant Marine. His expertise was in engineering, and he was chief engineer on the steel hulled, state-of-the-art T-2 oil tankers late in WW II. After the war he became chief engineer at the Staten Island Hospital in New York City, where I was born. Dad and my Mom, Hilda May Hikins, were great parents, never abusive, and always concerned about their children's welfare. Both Dad and Mom were splendid members of "The Greatest Generation." Though both died long ago, I miss them every day.
