He married Mary Ellen Esther (Hosking) Crofts in 1897, and had children Alfred Roy Crofts, Rita Crofts, John David "Drake" Crofts, and Lorna Mary Crofts. John Crofts died at age 51 years old on August 13, 1927 in Bendigo.

In 1875, in the year that John Christopher Crofts was born, on March 1st, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. The Act prohibited racial discrimination in both public accommodations and jury duty. Opposed by the public, the "public accommodations" sections of the Act were overturned by the Supreme Court eight years later.
