John Cook Tainsh Jr. of Ballarat East, City of Ballarat County, VIC Australia was born in 1864 to John Cook Tainsh and Jane (Small) Tainsh. He had siblings Eliza Cook (Tainsh) Hicks, Mary Scott (Tainsh) Membrey, William Tainsh, and Jane Tainsh. He married Agnes Har (Bennett) Tainsh, and had a child James Tainsh. John Tainsh died at age 20 years old on November 25, 1885 in Ballarat East.

In 1864, in the year that John Cook Tainsh Jr. was born, on April 22nd, the Coinage Act of 1864 was passed by Congress. It mandated that "In God We Trust" was to be placed on all United States coins and created a 2 cent coin. Later - in 1956 - "In God We Trust" replaced "E Pluribus Unum" - which means out of many, one - as the national motto.

In 1870, he was only 6 years old when on March 31st, Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American male who voted in an election - a local election about the town charter. Peterson, a school principal, was also the first to hold elected office and the first to sit on a jury.
