John Cruise was born in 1860 to Thomas Cruise and Sarah Ann (Searle) Cruise Brotherson O'Neil, and had a sister Alice Elizabeth (Cruise) Tuckett. He married Matilda Cruise, and had a child John Edgar Cruise. John Cruise died at age 47 years old in 1907 in Jerilderie, Murrumbidgee Council County, NSW Australia, and was buried at Jerilderie Cemetery in Jerilderie.

In 1860, in the year that John Cruise was born, on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.

In 1874, when he was merely 14 years old, on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.
