SHIPPING British Empire ( emigrants ), 546 tons, Thos. F. Haines, sailed from Deal 10th October. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. Geelong, January 16. Arrived. British Empire, 546 tons, from London, F. Haines, master. The Argus, Melbourne. 18th January 1855. PORT OF GEELONG. Arrived. January 16, British Empire, barque, 544 tons, T. F. Haines, from London, Dr. Alfred, Surgeon, Superintendent, and two hundred and forty-four Government immigrants. -Imports. January 16, British Empire: 25 hhds. brandy 13 casks stout, 63 packages, 23 hhds. and 57 quarter casks wines, and a large cargo of undescribed goods. The Geelong Advertiser, 19th January 1855. SHIPPING. THE BRITISH EMPIRE. - A complimentary address to Capt. Haines, from the emigrants by this fine ship appears in our advertising columns. The British Empire sailed from London on the 18th October, and anchored at Point Henry on 16th January, thus making the run in eighty-seven days.

In 1827, in the year that John Curtiss Tolliday was born, on February 28th, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - the B&O - was incorporated. The B&O became the first railroad to carry both people and freight and was Maryland's answer to the Erie Canal. Construction began on July 4th, 1828.
