John Eden Walter was born in 1900 to August Ferdinand Walter and Margaret Ann (Dean) Walter, and had siblings Myra Phyllis Leila (Walter) Croxford, Eileen (Walter) Mahlstedt, Ida Irene Ellie (Walter) Roach, Arthur Clarence Dean Walter, and Annie Margaret Uneta (Walter) Ramage. John Walter married Dulcie Walter, and they were married until John's death in 1973.

In 1900, in the year that John Eden Walter was born, the German physicist Max Planck formulated an energy theory, postulating the existence of "quanta," which lays the groundwork for the quantum theory of modern physics. In December, he introduced a paper on the Planck postulate which stated that E=hv - the energy of a photon is proportional to its frequency times a constant. Planck won a Nobel Prize in 1918 for his work in theoretical Physics.

In 1920, when he was 20 years old, on January 1, over 6000 people were arrested and put in prison because they were suspected of being communists. . Many had to be released in a few weeks and only 3 guns were found in their homes. The U.S. Department of Justice "red hunt" netted thousands of "radicals" and suspected "communists" and aliens were deported. But the "hunt" ended after Attorney General Palmer forecast a massive radical uprising on May Day and the day passed without incident.
