John Francis Slattery of Woodstock, City of Whittlesea County, VIC Australia was born in 1844 to Michael Slattery and Catherine Odonnell Slattery. He married Agnes Elizabeth (Lennon) Slattery, and had children Joseph Paul Slattery, Mary Cecelia Slattery, Clare Slattery, Kathleen Slattery, Agnes Anne (Slattery) Sweeney, Emilie Frances Slattery, Nora Victoria Slattery, Francis William Slattery, Gregory John Slattery, and Leo Michael Slattery. John Slattery died at age 55 years old in 1900 in Woodstock.

In 1844, in the year that John Francis Slattery was born, on July 3rd, the last known pair of great auk were killed in Iceland. A flightless bird, the average auk was about 33 inches tall and weighed about 11 pounds with a black back and white belly. They were most often found along the coast of Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Canada Great Britain, Ireland - and sometimes as far south as Spain.
