John Franz Heinrich Schmidt of Australia was born on October 21, 1883 in Collingwood to Theodore Edward Smith and Isabella Hardie Schmidt. He had siblings Mary Catherine F Schmidt, George Francis William Schmidt, Jean Agnes Elizabeth Schmidt, and John Fraser Smith. John Schmidt married Mabel Vivienne Geard, and died at age 79 years old in 1962.

In 1883, in the year that John Franz Heinrich Schmidt was born, from August 26th through August 27th, Krakatoa - in Indonesia - erupted. 70% of the island - 163 villages - were destroyed and more than 36,400 people were killed by the eruption and the tsunami resulting from it. It was one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions ever.

In 1921, at the age of 38 years old, John was alive when the silent film The Sheik, directed by George Melford and starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres (also featuring Adolphe Menjou) debuted on October 21st. Critics weren't enthusiastic but the public loved it - in the first few weeks 125,000 people had seen the movie - and it eventually exceeded $1 million in ticket sales. And Rudolph Valentino, an Italian American, became the heartthrob of a female generation.
