In 1909, in the year that John Fridman was born, explorer Robert Peary, a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy, claimed to have been the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. His claim has been disputed for over a century - some say that he ended up 60 miles from the North Pole. Peary was the only navigator on his team and he didn't submit his records for public review.

In 1925, John was 16 years old when on November 28th, radio station WSM broadcast the Grand Ole Opry for the first time. Originally airing as “The WSM Barn Dance”, the Opry (a local term for "opera") was dedicated to honoring country music and in its history has featured the biggest stars and acts in country music.

Do you know what cow shoes, bootlegs, moonshiners, John Barleycorn, and stills are? Have you seen what these things really looked like? Discover for yourself what life was like during Prohibition with this collection of photos showing life from the 1920s until the early 1930s when people could legally drink again. Did you know: The Temperance movement, active throughout the 19th and early 20th century, led to Prohibition. Alcoholic beverages (their "sale, production, importation, and transportation") were banned from January 17th, 1920 through December 5th, 1933. While you couldn't distill or sell alcohol, you could drink it - if you could find it!
