    Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth, 10 November 1866. DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT. Another of the old residents has been called from among us; we refer to Dr. Gemmell, of Wooragee. It is with regret that we have to record the death of this gentleman, which took place yesterday at his residence, after a protracted illness. Dr. Gemmell's loss will be felt by a wide circle of acquaintances throughout the district. For a long time he practised his profession at Wangaratta. The South Australian, Adelaide, 10 January 1845. SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. ARRIVED. JAN. 8- The brig Dorset, 89 tons, Walsh, from Sydney, Passengers in the cabin - Mrs. Walsh, Dr. Gemmell, Mrs. J. Harris, and Mr. J. M. Joshua; in the steerage - 17 adults and 7 children. Sydney Morning Herald, 9 September 1848. -------------MARRIED.-------------- At Parramatta, by the Rev. H.H. Bobart, on the 5th instant, John Gemmell, Esq., surgeon, of the Ovens River, to Maria Nash Winnington, grand-daughter of Mr. Andrew Nash, of Parramatta. DEPARTURES. September 29 1848. In 1817, in the year that John Gemmell M.D. was born, on June 12th, German inventor Karl Drais created and rode a dandy horse - also called a "Draisine" or "Laufmaschine". It was the earliest form of a bicycle and had no pedals - the dandy horse was wooden and ridden by running or walking while sitting on the bike.

In 1827, he was only 10 years old when on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).
