He was classified as a Private and was part of the Selectees (enlisted men) group. John's enlistment branch was the Army, and he enlisted on September 22, 1943. He served for two years and five months before being discharged on February 12, 1946. After his time in service, he lived in Hathoro, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, USA with his wife Helen Catherine Rowiniski (1920-1990). The couple had two daughters together including Carol Keyburn (1942-2019).
