John Harold Lidgerwood 1888 - 1969

John Harold Lidgerwood of Camberwell, City of Boroondara County, VIC Australia was born on October 6, 1888 in Birregurra to Robert Lidgerwood and Martha Lillian Devling Lidgerwood. He had siblings Robert Henry Lidgerwood, Alfred Ernest Ledgerwood, Horace Richard Lidgerwood, Edward Seymour Lidgerwood, James Wilson Lidgerwood, William James Lidgerwood, Ida Millicent (Lidgerwood) Jones, and Walter John Lidgerwood. He married Margaret Eileen Burns in 1911, and had children Thelma Kathleen Lidgerwood, Norman Maxwell Lidgerwood, and Bruce Harold Lidgerwood. John Lidgerwood died at age 80 years old on May 13, 1969 in Camberwell.

In 1888, in the year that John Harold Lidgerwood was born, on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.

In 1898, by the time he was merely 10 years old, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
