John Henry Gieschen Sr. 1865 - 1910

John Henry Gieschen Sr. of Whalla Australia was born in 1865 to Wilhelm "William" Gieschen and Elizabeth (Ansell) Gieschen. John Gieschen had siblings Marion Marryanne Wilhelmina (Gieschen), William Frederick Geischer, and Esther Elizabeth (Gieschen) Heath. He married Emma Chivers Gieschen in 1884. They had children Mabel Chivers Scott, Marian Williamhena Gieschen, and Esther Ann (Gieschen) Cantieni. He would also marry Elizabeth Carrick Gieschen in 1891. They had children John Henry Gieschen Jr, Elizabeth Gieschen, Marian Jane Gieschen, Evelina Ellen Gieschen, William Frederick Gieschen, and Godfrey Allan Gieschen. John Gieschen died at age 45 years old in 1910 in Whalla.

In 1865, in the year that John Henry Gieschen Sr. was born, on September 26th, Champ Ferguson, a Confederate guerrilla, became the first person to be convicted of war crimes arising from the Civil War. (There was only one other person convicted of war crimes in the Civil War.) He was found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges arising from the murder of 53 people. On October 20, he was hung.

In 1873, John was just 8 years old when on March 3rd, the U.S. Congress enacted the Comstock Law. The law made it illegal to send any "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" material through the U.S. mail. This included erotica, contraceptives, sex toys, abortifacients, information about these items, and "personal letters alluding to any sexual content or information".
