The Great Southern Advocate. Korumburra. Victoria. 14th April 1921. DEATH OF MR. JOHN LE MAITRE. The many friends of the Le Maitre family will regret to hear of the death of Korumburra's grand old man, Mr. John Le Maitre, which took place at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James Wynne, in Station-street, yesterday morning. Deceased who had only been I'll for a few days, passed away very peacefully. The late Mr. Le Maitre, who was born at Guernsey, Channel Island, 91 years ago, came out to Australia in 1853. He made the trip for the good of his health and intended to go back, but evidently the Sunny South was too attractive. He started work in Melbourne and was among the first carpenters to erect houses on Emerald Hill, South Melbourne. At Geelong Mr. Le Maitre married, afterwards going to Ballarat, where he went into business as a storekeeper. He went through the early mining boom, and was a resident of Ballarat at the time of the Eureka Stockade. His next trip was to New Zealand, but a return back to Ballarat soon followed, where he took up land. About 32 years ago deceased came to this district and settled on land at Kardella South. About nine years ago the old gentleman retired from the land. He was of a very nice and genial disposition and was highly respected and popular with all who knew him. A family of five sons and five daughters survive, viz:- John, Peter, Arthur, Fred, and Sam:, and Eliza ( Mrs. Richards ), Mary Ann ( Mrs. Sage), Maggie ( Mrs. H. Fowler ), Lucy Ellen ( Mrs. Jas. Wynne ), and Sarah Jane ( Mrs. A. Evans ). There are also 40 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
