John Hiram Keeney was born on November 22, 1804 to Jonathan Anthony Keeney and Mary Hannah McGlothlen, and had siblings Jonathan Anthony Keeney, Samuel Thomas Keeney, Joseph David Seaberry Keeney, Charles William Perry Keeney, and Elizabeth Martha Keeney. John Keeney died at age 52 years old on September 2, 1857.

In 1804, in the year that John Hiram Keeney was born, on May 14th, Lewis and Clark started out from St. Louis, Missouri on an expedition to explore the West and to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the trip shortly after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. He wanted the new territory mapped and wanted to establish an American presence in the West before Great Britain or other European powers could claim it.

In 1821, by the time he was 17 years old, on March 5th, President James Monroe was sworn in for his second term. Because March 4th - the day that the inauguration was supposed to be held - was a Sunday, Monroe moved it to Monday, the 5th. Also, the swearing in was held indoors because of a snowstorm.
