He married Elizabeth Houghton, and they had children Alice Mary Hodgkin, Wilfred Houghton Hodgkin, Ellen Hodgkin, Alfred Hodgkin, Ann Hodgkin, and Howard Houghton. He also married Anne Backhouse, and they had a child Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin. He would also marry Elizabeth Howard, and they had children John Eliot Hodgkin, Thomas Hodgkin, Mariabella Hodgkin, Elizabeth Hodgkin, and Luke Howard Hodgkin. John Hodgkin died at age 75 years old on July 3, 1875 in Bournemouth, Dorset County.
