    John Hrinishin, 94, formerly of West Finch Street, Broadalbin, died Monday morning, September 14, 2015, at the Winchester Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Winchester, MA. He was born in Brooklyn on October 30, 1920, a son of Nicholas and Anastasia Turko Hrinishin and moved to Broadalbin in 1930. John was a 1940 graduate of Broadalbin High School who excelled in both basketball and baseball. This earned him athletic scholarships at Pennington Preparatory School in New Jersey where he graduated in 1941 and then at Clarkson College of Technology in Potsdam NY where he attended for one year. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years where he served in both the European and Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. John played on the U.S. Army baseball team while stationed in the Manila, Philippines and played for the St. Louis Brown baseball franchise right after service for a short period. Mr. Hrinishin was employed as a civil engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation from 1946 until his retirement in 1983. He provided road construction oversight for numerous local state highway projects to include the Amsterdam Bridge over the Mohawk River and large stretches of Route 30 locally to Indian Lake. John was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Broadalbin. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 337 in Broadalbin. He was married to Ida E. Bonville Hrinishin on February 5, 1955. She died on February 5, 2005. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, William, who died in 2004; and his sister, Anne, who died in 1977. Survivors include two sons, John W. Hrinishin of Bedford, MA and Mark R. Hrinishin of Broadalbin; a daughter, Carol A. Pacheco of Littleton, CO; eleven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 and Black Street) Johnstown. The American Legion will conduct a ritual at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 7 North Street, Broadalbin, with the Rev. Jun Segura, officiating. Burial will be in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 337, in care of the funeral home.
