John Irwin Shaffer III (76) of West Chester passed away at Chester County Hospital after a strong fight against a brief illness on Thursday,December 22,2022. John was born in West Chester and was the son of the late John Irwin Shaffer Jr. and the late Helen Syder Shaffer. John was a proud US Air Force veteran, having served in 1967-1971,including a deployment to Korea during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of West Chester University and worked as Materials/Logistic Manager for various corporations throughout his lengthy career. After retiring,John enjoyed lively philosophical conversations with his children,as well as fishing, gardening, and reading books with his grandchildren. John was a life-long learner and enjoyed taking classes at Immaculata College and other educational venues in the area. John also finally had time to hone his gardening skills both at home and through his volunteer work at Longwood Gardens. While his home gardening often involved lengthy battles with rabbits and other indigenous varmint,John usually prevailed and was able to share his crop with neighbors and family. In addition to his gardening,John enjoyed spending time in his retirement sharpening his skills on the grill and smoker. For the most part, John was greatly successful. And on those rare occasions when things don't go well, everyone would agree with John that it was the weather, the grill,or perhaps an unusually suspenseful Phillies inning that may have caused a distraction. Regardless,he knew how to put the cooked food on the clean plates. In addition to his hobbies on the home front,John was able to share countless travel adventures with his best friend and companion of 20 years,Antoinette (Toni) Daly. John and Toni traveled constantly, including trips to see glaciers in Alaska, wine trails in Oregon, hot springs in Yellowstone, mosquitoes in Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, and the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississippi,to name just a few. As an avid bird watcher, some would think John's favorite trips may have been to the Everglades in Florida or Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge in Virginia, but John may have quietly admitted that the Jameson's tour in Dublin,Ireland was his favorite adventure of the past few years. John is survived by his children,Johnna Lynn Koehler and Marianne Slaby (John) as well as his grandchildren Aaron Koehler and Joshua Slaby. John is also survived by his companion,Antoinette Daly, and his stepchildren Christopher Daly (fellow "outlaw...John's words...Christine) Kathryn (fellow "outlaw"...John's words...Alexander Gasbarro),as well as stepgrandchildren Katia and Allison Daly, and Ivy,Emmett,Cierra,Taylor and Isabella Gasbarro,as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. John is also survived by his siblings Helen Ann Meenan (Anthony),Robert Shaffer (Sherri),Elizabeth Masurat and Andrea Wood (David). John was preceded in death by his sister Mary Gail Gallagher. Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation on Friday,January 13,2023 from 9:30-10:15 A.M. at Saints Peter and Paul School,1327 E. Boot Rd.,West Chester,PA followed by his funeral service at 10:30 A.M. at the church. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery in Coatesville,PA.
