  • Introduction

    Fr. John Joseph Gallahue was born to William Gallahue (1898 - 1962), born in Ireland and Nora V Scanlon, born about 1902, also in Ireland. He had three siblings - two sisters and one brother - one of which was Helen Gallahue (1932 - 2014). Highly educated - he had a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy - Father John spent most of his time in the priesthood in various places in Chile. For a while, he worked in a parish in Santiago, a change from most of his assignments, which were in small towns, working with the poor. See John J Gallahue: Professions for a full list of his parish work. John Gallahue returned to the United States at the end of his career and died in Sleepy Hollow, New York.

    Father John was Caucasian, of Irish heritage. Both of his parents were born in Ireland.
  • Early Life & Education

    He attended Annunciation Grammar School and graduated from LaSalle Academy in June,1952. Father John the attended Maryknoll Junior Seminary and Maryknoll College in Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy (1957). From August 1957 through June 1958, he attended the Maryknoll Novitiate in Massachusetts and then studied at Maryknoll, New York where he received a M.R.E. in Moral Theology in June 1962.
  • Professional Career

    Ordained a Maryknoll Priest in 1962, he was assigned to the country of Chile. His first parish was in Curepto, Chile. His next parish was with the Mapuche Indians in the town of Chol Chol, working with Chilean Franciscan sisters. Father John then spent 10 years at St. Albert parish in Santiago, Chile, followed by two other parishes, Good Shepherd and Our Lady of Carmen. After those assignments in Chile, he was assigned to a school in Santiago until 2003. Briefly returning to the United States, he went back to Chile for a while, then again returned to the United States, where he resided at St. Teresa's.
