    At age 19 the US Army AirCorp recruited him to serve as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 51st Fighter Air Squadron 10th US Army Airforce from 1942 - 1946 WWII China-Burma-India theatre. As an officer he was based in the jungles of Burma, trained to assist pilots flying the P-40 fighters to navigate the Himalayan mountains while escorting vital cargo planes to China. After their airbase was bombed by the Japanese he was awarded the Bronze Star and received a field promotion.

    John Joseph Giglio, DDS White Plains - Born to Amalia & Raffaele Giglio on June 4, 1924 in New York City, NY. John attended local NYC public schools and at the age of 14 was selected to attend the newly established Bronx High School of Science where a love of science propelled him to attend Manhattan College of Engineering. At age 19 the US Army AirCorp recruited him to serve as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 51st Fighter Air Squadron 10th US Army Airforce from 1942 - 1946 WWII China-Burma-India theatre. As an officer he was based in the jungles of Burma, trained to assist pilots flying the P-40 fighters to navigate the Himalayan mountains while escorting vital cargo planes to China. After their airbase was bombed by the Japanese he was awarded the Bronze Star and received a field promotion. The war ended and he returned home in 1946 and entered Fordham University as a pre-medical student. In 1949 the military visited Fordham University and indicated they had a significant need for dentists and recruited his entire class of pre-medical students. He entered Georgetown University in 1949 and began his medical school training. While in his senior year he married the love of his life Elvira A. Malfetano December 16, 1951 and graduated in 1952 as a dentist with a specialty in oral surgery - prosthodontist. Returning back to New York he entered his medical residencies at New York Hospital and the Bronx Veterans Hospital at Castle Point. In May of 1959 with the assistance of the GI BILL he opened his medical practice in White Plains NY and practiced dentistry earning diplomatic credentials from the American Board of Oral Implantology Dentistry in 1992 . Retired in March of 2006 at the age of 82 after 47 years of private and volunteer dentistry. He is survived by his brother Julus, 5 children, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. A Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 7th, 2:00pm - 4:00pm and 7:00pm - 9:00pm at Ballard-Durand Funeral & Cremation Services in White Plains, NY. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Bedford Village, NY on Saturday, Feb. 8th at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, please send any gift to the Bronx High School of Science to honor his love of education.
