John "Jack" Daniel Toner 1889 - 1931

John Daniel Toner of Traralgon, Latrobe City County, VIC Australia was born in 1889 in Morwell to Patrick Toner and Mary Devlin Toner. He had siblings Thomas Toner, Mary Ann Rose Toner, Rose Toner, Catherine Margaret Toner, and Charles Bernard Toner. He married Euphemia Ann (Carter) Toner, and had children Mary Ann Rose Toner and Olive May Toner. John Toner died at age 41 years old on November 4, 1931 in Traralgon.

In 1889, in the year that John "Jack" Daniel Toner was born, on April 20th, Adolf Hitler was born in Austria-Hungary - now Austria. In his early 30's, he began his rise to power in German politics, eventually becoming the leader of the Nazi Party and Führer of Nazi Germany. He presided over the death of millions of civilians as well as leading Germany through World War II.

In 1902, he was only 13 years old when about 150 thousand United Mine Workers went on strike in eastern Pennsylvania for a wage increase and more suitable hours. They eventually got a 10% raise and their workday was reduced from 10 hours to 9. Because winter was coming and most people at the time heated their homes with coal, President Teddy Roosevelt arbitrated between the owners and the workers - the first time that the Federal government arbitrated in a strike.
