John James Carrolan of South Melbourne, Port Phillip City County, VIC Australia was born in 1892 in City of Kingston County to John Carrolan and Mary Gardner Carrolan. He had siblings Robert Carrolan, Thomas Daniel Carrolan, Francis James Carrolan, John Richard Carrolan, and Daniel Patrick Carrolan. He married Mary (Gleeson) Carrolan in 1918, and had a child Mary Teresa Carrolan. John Carrolan died at age 70 years old on July 19, 1963 in South Melbourne, Port Phillip City County.

In 1892, in the year that John James Carrolan was born, on January 1st, Ellis Island opened to process immigrants. 700 passed through on the first day - in the first year, 450,000 were processed. The processing center was originally a 3 story wooden building - with outbuildings - that burned down a few years later.

In 1902, at the age of merely 10 years old, John was alive when the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
