John James Suffield of Stawell Australia was born in 1872 to George Suffield and Margaret Dickens Suffield. He married Daisy Noble Suffield, and had children John Vincent Suffield, William Gordon Suffield, Leslie Bernard Suffield, and Olive Gladys (Suffield) Bloomfield. John Suffield died at age 45 years old in 1917 in Stawell.

In 1872, in the year that John James Suffield was born, on May 10th, Victoria Woodhull became the first woman to be nominated for President of the United States. She was too young to qualify for President - a year under the minimum age, 35 - and women couldn't vote but she was nominated by the Equal Rights Party, which supported equal rights and suffrage for women. She didn't appear on the official ballot.

In 1884, at the age of only 12 years old, John was alive when on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today.
