John Joseph Antonie of Mildura Australia was born in 1904 to Vincent Antonie and Margaret Drony Rodrigues. He had siblings Bernard Alphonsus Rodrigues, Annie Josephine Rodriques, Ignatius Fran Rodrigues, Edward Antonio Rodrigues, Emanuel Antonie, and John Domenigo Antonie. John Antonie died at age 62 years old in 1966 in Mildura.

In 1904, in the year that John Joseph Antonie was born, the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.

In 1915, at the age of only 11 years old, John was alive when the Germans first used poison gas as a weapon at the second Battle of Ypres during World War I. While noxious gases had been used since ancient times, this was the first use of poisonous gas - in this case, lethal chlorine gas - in modern war. Subsequently, the French and British - as well as the United States when they entered World War 1 - developed and used lethal gas in war.
