John Lucien Wernig was born on January 31, 1925 in Baltimore County, Maryland, USA. He is the son of Francis Wernig (1895-1949) and Corinne Lonsway (1889-1968) and had older siblings Corinne and Francis Wernig. They grew up in Fremont, Sandusky, Ohio and he attended Fremont Ross High School there. He later moved to Clevelnad, OH. At the age of 18 he registered for the military draft on February 1, 1943, in Fremont, Ohio. John resided in Fremont, Sandusky, Ohio, and was a student at that time. Later on June 11, 1943, John enlisted in the military in Toledo, Ohio. He was married to Stella C Raneri (1923-2009) and the couple had three children together including a daughter named Carol Wernig.
