John Mathers Jr. of Williamsburg, Hampshire County, MA was born on June 18, 1893 at Home North Franklin St., in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to John Mathers Sr. and Lily (Pritchard). He had siblings Robert Mathers and Elizabeth (Mathers). He married Ruby (Miller), and died at age 90 years old in September 1983 at At son's house, Goshen Rd. in Williamsburg, Mass.. John Mathers was buried at Spring Grove cemetery in Northampton.

    John's father was John Mathers Sr. born 1860, Philadelphia, Penn. to Robert and Elizabeth (Prentiss). John Mathers Sr.'s older sister Anne was born in county Down Ireland, where the Mathers emigrated from. John Jr. was the first surviving child of John Sr. And Lily (Pritchard) Mathers. Their first two children were born still, 364 days apart. John Jr. had a brother Robert and sister Elizabeth. All were born in Philadelphia. John Sr. was previously married to a Jessie Brainard from Hadley Mass. They met at the 1876 world's fair and were married in Belchertown, Mass. The following year. Jessie died in childbirth the following year, so John Sr. had to move back to Philadelphia for childcare, Curtis suffered from cerebral palsy and died when John Jr. was approximately 12 years old. When John Jr. was 14 the family moved to Hadley Mass. to purchase a farm. They stayed at Captain Brainard's house on the Hadley common. They purchased a 55-acre farm in Williamsburg, Mass. in 1907, John stayed in Hadley to finish school (Hopkins Academy) eight grade and moved to Williamsburg in 1908.

    John lived in Philadelphia until 1907. Their home was the upper floors above Pritchard's hardware store. The neighbors were the Pritchards. Lily Pritchard was John Jr. mother. John's aunt Anne married Henry E.P. Pritchard, Lily's brother. Living on the farm in Williamsburg Lily and John Sr. were foster parents to several children as well as their own three Johm Jr., Robert and Elizabeth.

    John was drafted approximately in 1916 but, was discharged in 1916 because he had a dependent wife and child.

    John worked for his father-in-law William H. Miller who was a cabinet maker in Malden, Mass. for a short time. About 1924 he moved to Easthampton, Mass. and managed a Philipp's grocery store on Main St. for many years.
