He was married to Ada Mary Jane (Gibson) Mckernan in 1899, and had children Harriet Mary Ann "Hatty" McKernan, Amy Elizabeth Mckernan, Olive Elva McKernan, Myra May Mckernan, and Alexander Gibson "Sandy" McKernan. John Mckernan died at age 81 years old on May 28, 1951 in Euroa.
