John Mcmillin 1819 - 1889

John McMillin of Prahran Australia was born in 1819 to Martha Mitchell and Daniel Robertson McMillin. He married Elizabeth (Harris) McMillin, and had a child Emma (McMillin) Ridoutt. John McMillin died at age 70 years old in 1889 in Prahran, and was buried at St Kilda Cemetery/Hotham St in Saint Kilda East, Port Phillip City County, VIC.

In 1819, in the year that John Mcmillin was born, on February 22nd, Spain ceded Florida to the United States. The United States agreed to give up any claims on Spanish Texas and pay Spain $5,000,000. Called the Adams–Onís Treaty of 1819, it lasted only 183 days - until Spain recognized the independence of Mexico.

In 1831, John was only 12 years old when on November 7th, slave trading was forbidden in Brazil. Purchasing slaves had begun under Portuguese rule in the mid-16th century - slaves were used on sugarcane plantations. It wasn't until 1888, however, that slavery was totally abolished.
